Chennai Metro riders on the west side finally get a new line. On Sunday, 11 October 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first stretch of Phase 2 — Poonamallee to Vadapalani — built at about ₹4,900 crore. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay was there too. After the flag-off at Porur Bypass, both of them rode the metro to Poonamallee Bypass and back.
For the rest of us, the useful part is this: public service on this stretch starts at 4 pm the same day.
Is Chennai Metro Phase 2 open today?
Yes. The first Phase 2 stretch is open for passengers from 4 pm on 11 October 2026 until 9 pm. From Monday, 12 October, trains run 7 am to 9 pm. That is shorter than Phase 1 (5 am to 11 pm), because night work is still going on at six stations between Porur Junction and Vadapalani.
Which stations are open on the new stretch?
This is Corridor 4 of Phase 2, often called the Yellow Line. About 15 km, 11 elevated stations open first:
- Poonamallee Bypass
- Poonamallee Bus Stand
- Poonamallee Government Hospital
- Karayanchavadi
- Kumananchavadi
- Kattupakkam
- Iyappanthangal
- Thelliyaragaram
- Porur Bypass
- Porur Junction
- Vadapalani
Trains run both ways between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani.
Which stations are not open yet?
Six stations on this corridor stay closed for now so civil work can continue at night:
- Alapakkam
- Karambakkam
- Valasaravakkam
- Alwarthirunagar
- Saligramam Warehouse
- Saligramam
Trains will skip these until that work is done. Frequency should improve after that.
What is the train frequency?
CMRL is putting about 15 trains on this stretch at the start.
- Peak (8–11 am and 5–8 pm): about every 10 minutes
- Off-peak (7–8 am, 11 am–5 pm, and 8–9 pm): about every 15 minutes
Last train from both Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani is at 9 pm.
How much is the fare from Poonamallee to Vadapalani?
Fares on this stretch are about ₹10 to ₹40. A full trip from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani is around ₹40. Short hops near Poonamallee start lower (about ₹10–₹20). CMRL said the full fare chart would go up on the official site after inauguration — check the board or app before you travel if you need an exact station pair.
Phase 1 ticket rules stay as they were; this new stretch was described as keeping its own ₹10–₹40 band for these 11 stations.
Who inaugurated the line, and what else happened?
PM Modi inaugurated the stretch. CM Vijay received him in Chennai and joined the metro ride. The first ceremonial train ran from Porur Bypass around noon. Later the same day, the Prime Minister was also set to open and lay foundation stones for other projects in Tamil Nadu — highways, railways, ports, and more — worth thousands of crores. For metro riders, the Phase 2 opening is the part that changes the daily trip.
Why does this matter for Chennai travel?
Poonamallee, Porur, and Vadapalani have been stuck in road traffic for years. This elevated stretch gives a direct metro link from the western suburbs toward Vadapalani, where you can connect onward with the rest of the city network as interchanges allow. Last-mile buses are also being talked about along this corridor — useful if your stop is a short road hop from the station.
